Bittersweet

So today marks the final day of our week filled with company. By this time tomorrow Papa and Gramma and big cousin Trig will all be back in Kansas and recovering from their big journey west. Chris will be working and the kids and I will be puttering around the house trying to get used to the quiet again. A week we have looked forward to for what seems like an eternity will simply be in the past. We will clean. We will do laundry. We will eat cupcakes and feel sorry for ourselves. We too will recover from the chaos that has somehow become normal. And although we will start getting back into our own routines, life won’t quite be normal…it will be sad and boring.

It is amazing how SO much of the year I do really well out here. I miss home and everything it encompasses like crazy, but I do okay. I don’t sit around day after day crying or feeling homesick. I don’t dwell on the “what ifs?” I am happy. I have two sweet, beautiful kids who need “all” of me, not just the me that can tune in when I am not feeling sad. We shop, we play, we just “be.” We have made great friends out here in the desert and we honestly keep pretty busy. But it isn’t home…and it never will be.
It is always the hardest the day friends and family leave. KNOWING that the fun we have had and the memories we have created will soon be just that…memories. I cherish each of those memories and am so incredibly grateful for them all, but a tiny little part of myself is saddened knowing how many more memories we would have if we were just a little closer.
I am sorry to be so depressing here. I was literally FINE until I walked in here and started typing this entry…and then the emotion just came pouring out. We have had an amazing week and one filled with action! We have had the birthday party, late night swims, a picnic in the mountains (up in the “high country” so it was only in the 80s…not the 100s!), a trek to a ghost town, a trip to the splash park, a hike in the HOT mountains by our house, watched the jets take off and land at an air force base, sprinklers, slip n slides, popsicles and a whole lotta fun!!

I promise to update more over the next few days…I literally have hundreds of photos to sort through and edit and of course I want to share! But for today I am going to head back out in the 100+ temps and watch the boys swim with Papa!
Here is one of my favorite pictures from last night at the splash park! Trig absolutely LOVED it and was having a ball with Gentry! It is obvious that they were beyond happy in this moment! A moment forever frozen in time to bring a smile to my face!
(And of course I gave it the vintage feel…there is just something about summer pictures looking faded that I LOVE!)

The Littlest Sneak Peek!!

Well, the months of preparation and anticipation for the big cupcake bash are now a fond memory! We had the party this afternoon and everything went great!! We are worn out from all the excitement, but we could not have asked for a better party for our sweet little Gentry girl!

Here is just one TINY little snippet to hold you over for a few days! Remember our family is still in town and we are spending time with them and have action packed days planned for the rest of their time here!
By the way…I am so NOT loving too many of our pictures but believe me when I say you will be seeing this chair and that fun pink pettiskirt again in an outside photo shoot without all of the distractions of a party!
Photobucket
And I of course could not post without saying HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Mom and Dad! They celebrate their 30th on Sunday (Gentry’s actual birthday). They got a little jipped…I didn’t get their present done because I was too busy preparing for the party and our company, but I promise you will get it soon!!

I Am Still Here!

You can’t say I didn’t warn ya that things were going to be crazy around here and my updates were probably not going to be as often as normal!! Lucky for you all I am somewhat addicted to blogging and just had to leave you with a lil’ something today!!

And since Grandma is sleeping in the office and I can’t get to our regular pics, I thought I would share yet another dress I bought Gentry for her birthday. Darned Old Navy just came out with this really happy, bold, FUN line and we all know anything that has matching shoes or hats catches my eye! And the polka dots make it even better!
First of all, here is the dress! They have it in pink, but since she already has a pink polka dot dress, I ordered the blue one!
Photobucket

And I REALLY hope her chunky little feet can fit in these! I even ordered a size bigger than normal with that in mind!!
Photobucket
And this, well, this is just a HAPPY little sweater! We are having family pictures taken in a few weeks and I thought the blue dress with this splash of bright green would really pop! Now, I just have the plan the rest of our outfits around Gentry girl!!
Photobucket
The first Grandma made it to town yesterday and the rest of the gang comes in tonight! The house is completely spotless…I literally cleaned like a crazy girl and somehow we have managed to keep it looking good…for an entire day now!! Those of you with small kids can appreciate that!
I ended up getting my hair more than just “shaped up” on Tuesday and I LOVE it…after sifting through the 17,000+ pictures I came to the conclusion that my hair is WAY too thick for just a regular bob – it looks like a mushroom – so I had my fabulous stylist give me another stacked bob…super cute if I do say so myself! Maybe I’ll happen to be in some pictures over the weekend so you can see it?!
The party is coming right along…I plan to do a few things today and then start decorating tomorrow!! I haven’t mentioned yet that I “delegated” out the task of baking the cupcakes. I was going to take it on and do it myself…whip up a bunch of little treats and then decorate them all differently. Yeah…NOT going to happen! I am not much into baking (although cupcakes are easy!) and didn’t want the added stress of trying to make them perfect! So, the AMAZING bakery we used for the kids’ birthdays last year is coming to the rescue and handling the cupcake issue for us! All I have to say is YUMMY!! (I am making the cupcakes I am using for the jars…although I could NOT find little bitty jars anywhere!!)
And in case you weren’t following along back when I shared these pictures of their incredible cakes, here they are again!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Cute, hunh?! When we were in San Francisco in May I had a carrot cake cupcake and it was so incredibly good I decided that half of the cupcakes for the party should be carrot cake too! And mom, you will appreciate this, I talked to the bakery again yesterday and they WILL have cream cheese icing!
Well, my friends, the rest of the gang is still snoozing so I should hop in the shower and get ready for the day!! I am sure it will be another action packed one around here!!

The Joys of Boys

Why is it that the day I mop happens to be the day that Huntler does not lift the seat on the toilet and pees all over the just mopped (as in less than two hours ago) floor?! Can someone please share?! Or why did he run into a wall I  just touched up (last week) with his bike and leave a red scuff mark?!! (Yes, we allow bikes in our house. Not his big kid bike, just the trikes. It is SO hot here and we have TONS of tile for them to zoom around on!)

Needless to say, I re-mopped my bathroom and the floor is drying as I type. I have also gone out to the sweltering garage and got the paint back out and touched up the wall!
I love my kids more than anything, but it is only 1:00 and I am wearing down! Maybe it is good that I get to get my hair cut this afternoon and get a little break! I think I need it!
Okay…back to sweeping and mopping the kitchen now! Happy Tuesday!!

Two Lil’ Tidbits Tuesday

Okay…so once upon a time I was doing this Six on Saturday post every week telling each of you six little facts about me! Well, let’s just face it that I have not done such a great job with keeping up with that!! The main reason is that I am just not that interesting of a person! Really…I am a pretty low maintenance stay at home mom whom you probably wouldn’t even know if you ran into!

But I am hoping that maybe somehow I can pull off Two Lil’ Tidbits each and every Tuesday and share with you two random things about me that would probably more than likely not come up on their own!
So, let the fun begin!!
  1. I don’t mow the yard…never have, never will. I am just not the “mowing” type! Yes, I’ll go pull weeds and drag the hose all over to water (thank goodness we have an irrigation system here though!!) and do a little work out there, but it really isn’t my thing!! And especially in this HORRIBLE heat! WHEW! I have no idea how people work in this!
  2. Although I don’t mow, yesterday I did in fact have to use the good ole trusty shop vac to vacuum the yard! Yes…you are reading that correct! One of the downfalls (if you will) of large amounts of rain is that the soil here is so incredibly rock hard that it just can’t absorb it. There are all sorts of flash floods and such even when we just get half an inch! Anyway, our back yard seems to have a low spot where the water collects and stands when it gets too much. And because we are kinda picky about our lawn, we vacuum it up so it doesn’t just stand there and kill the grass. So after a big rain Sunday night and another one yesterday morning, the water was standing!! I bet we filled up the shop vac a good eight times with water…that is a whole lotta water my friends!!
Alrighty…so those aren’t overly interesting little facts, but they are just that, little facts!
I also wanted to let you know that my blog entries may be a little more sporadic over the next week or so! I am still here and fine…just busy!! Grandma Debbie is flying in tomorrow afternoon and my parents and nephew will be here Thursday evening! YAY!! Needless to say, there is a LOT going on around here with trying to get ready for our family and also the party!
And once the fam is here and the party is over, we are just going to enjoy having them around! My parents haven’t been out since Gentry’s birthday last year so we have lots of fun stuff planned for them and big cousin Trig!!
And on that note I need to get ready for the day! I am getting my hair cut (shaped back up!) this afternoon and I have an entire house to sweep!! And we STILL have yet to get the birthday girl her present (other than two outfits)…so, LOTS to do my friends, lots to do!!

When Life Hands You Umbrellas…

When life hands you umbrellas and you live in the desert, you make rain!! And that is just what we did on Friday!

The kids and I spent the morning running errands and searching all over creation for some super cute cupcake scrapbook paper that my new blog friend Denise has! Of course, Target’s around here are not on every other corner like they were back in Kansas, so we spent a good 40 minutes drive time (one way) just to visit two and struck out at both of them! However, I did manage to find some .39 shirts at Target. Yes, you are reading that correct my friends. Two good deals in one week…how about that?!! Target had all of their Fourth of July shirts on sale for 90% off and on a $3.99 shirt, that is a whopping .39 shirt!! I even bought two!! I figure they will make great play clothes! We seem to struggle with that around here…our kids just don’t really have “play clothes.” But now Gentry has a couple of play shirts! That is a start in the right direction anyway!!
Okay…so how I got off on that tangent I have NO idea! Where I was going was neither Target had the sought after paper so we went to JoAnn’s while we were in the area. I found all sorts of fun things there that I did NOT need (and some I did)!! But the kids struck gold! They had all of their umbrellas on sale for 60% off (yes…the THIRD great deal of the week!!), so each kiddo got one for less than the original price of one!! And let me tell you that they walked through the store holding/dragging their umbrellas and creating quite the scene!! How we managed to get out without breaking anything I will never know, but we did!
Anyway, when you live in the desert, rain is rare. Really rare. We happen to be in the midst of monsoon season in these parts and had our first rain in MONTHS Thursday night! And I am happy to report that we had all sorts of rain today…an entire quarter of an inch! I know…for anyone that does not live in desert that seems rather pitiful, but that is actually quite a bit for us, so we were happy! And monsoon season is just getting underway! Hopefully there is a lot more where that came from!!
I took over 200 pictures today of the kids playing in the puddles but am so NOT happy with what I got. I am not sure if I have just gotten used to my 50 mm lens and the other one seems to not be as great in quality or if it was just the fact that is was really, really cloudy and everything was just off. Who knows…I am going to Photoshop those pics later tonight or sometime in the next fews days.
But for tonight I have these! These are from Friday when we “made” it rain!! The kids were having a BALL!!

And I should tell you that Denise is great and she is sending me all of her leftover cupcake paper so I can create a little album of Gentry’s birthday! YAY! Thanks Denise!!

And The Winner Is…

And the winner of the super cute, fabulous little cupcake bow is Laura!! Just let me know if you want a headband or a clip Laura!! One of her guesses was 1:28 PM and Miss Gentry entered the world at 1:35 PM!! If you have been paying close attention, you will notice that I mentioned just this week that I was induced bright and early in the morning…that was a little nudge in the right direction!

Anyway, as I said before, I have oodles and oodles of ribbon and several extra cupcake charms and I would be happy to create something special for your little one…just send me an e-mail and we can chat about it!!  And once I get my Etsy shop up and running I plan on having some in there too!
And on that note I should get! I have TONS of things to get done and not enough “me” to do it all!! Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!!

The Cupcake Craze Continues…And a Giveaway!!

First of all, here are some shots of just a few of the hair bows I have been working on for party favors!!! They are all absolutely beyond adorable! Seriously…I am my own worst critic and I seem to find the flaws in EVERYTHING I do, but I am LOVIN’ these guys!! Gals?! Of course, I got more and more creative with each one, so the first couple are a little more simple than the last few, but not EVERYONE is quite as over the top as I am when it comes to hair pretties anyway!

Once again I have to say THANKS to Katie at Jelly Beads Designs for creating the amazing little cupcakes that serve as the centers of these bows! They are so stinkin’ cute!! And glittery too!
Go figure that when I was ready to take pictures the wind was blowing 30 miles an hour! And it was still 104 so I was sweating like crazy and getting all itchy in the grass! So needless to say, I am by no means loving these pictures! And they SURELY don’t do these little gems justice at all!
This one is Miss Gentry’s…I wanted her to have a pink bow and added all the sparkle I could!! And yes, those ribbons are really shimmery!! How fun is that?!! I think I bought every color they had I loved it so much! And I may be heading back (to Michael’s) next time I am out to restock my stash!
Photobucket
And here are a couple of others…just keep in mind the lighting is horrible and these pictures are kinda “blah!”
Photobucket
Oops…the cupcake is out of focus on this one!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Okay…are you ready for the FUN part of this post now?! Okay, well, I think it is all fun, but here is the part where one of you could be the lucky owner of this super cute cupcake bow!!
Photobucket
I have yet to put an alligator clip on it, so should you win and want a headband instead of a clip, I can totally make that happen (the headband is white just in case you are wondering)! Here is the deal…ANYONE can enter, but no more than five guesses per person please. Although I love you all, I do have somewhat of a life and don’t have hours upon hours to sit here pouring through what could become hundreds of comments! Okay…so now maybe I am just flattering myself, but five guesses is the max!! And even if you have never commented before, feel free!
You are probably wondering what it is you are guessing? Since all of this cupcake happiness is coming about because of my sweet little Gentry girl’s upcoming birthday bash, the first one to guess the exact time of day she was born will be the winner! The contest ends at noon Arizona time on Saturday! If no one guesses the exact time, the closest time will win!! And remember to put AM or PM!! And HAVE FUN!!
Oh…and I happen to have several little cupcakes left, so if anyone is interested in a custom bow (clip or headband), feel free to contact me! There is a link to my e-mail on the top right of my blog!!

A Special Delivery

Here he is – {Diesel 10} – the newest addition to our Thomas the Train collection. Okay…not “our” Thomas collection, but Huntler’s!! To be honest, we really don’t have all that many “Thomas” characters…most of our trains are just trains…not “someone!” However, last week sometime Huntler became familiar with Diesel 10. And he suddenly became obsessed. As in talking about him ALL the time! So consumed with him that we have had to print out three different pictures from the computer and cut them out so he can zoom them along his train track. Yeah…he is LOVIN’ Diesel 10 these days!!

Photobucket
This is the first toy that this has happened with…something he heard about somewhere or another and wanted. Our kids rarely ask for things when we go places. I am not sure if they just don’t know they can do that yet or what, but we never have big tantrums at the check out because someone wants candy or a cheap piece of plastic and I say no. It just doesn’t happen.
So last weekend Huntler was chatting on and on about Diesel 10 (not just Diesel…I made that mistake earlier and he informed me that this is Diesel 10) and I mentioned that we would look for him at Target. BIG MISTAKE. Target was plum out of Diesel 10′s and Huntler was heartbroken. Remember how I mentioned that both kids were not so well behaved in Target on Monday? This is what started it all!!
Anyway, we managed to get home and “forget” about Diesel 10 for awhile. And then it all came back and he remembered that we didn’t find him in Target. So I did what any good mama would do. I got on E-bay and ordered the darned train!! That was Monday night…we have been answering the question of “where” is Diesel 10 since then! But today, my friends, he arrived from his long journey west out of Illinois.
When I handed Huntler the package he asked, “A special delivery just for me?” Where in the world did he hear that?! We don’t talk about special deliveries around here! It made for lots of laughs and smiles for sure!!
