Okay…so here is the deal! Yesterday I mentioned the fact that we are going to New York City and I am looking forward to it. I just found out about this trip less than a week ago and I have like NO time to get ready because it is literally right around the corner! {Remember that because I am weird I don’t tell exactly when we will be gone despite the fact that we now have a police officer for a neighbor and a super sensitive security system!!}
So there are two events that I have to get really dressed up for…a Broadway show and a fancy dinner. Well, just so happens that I have two fun little black dresses! However, it also just so happens that one of them hasn’t been worn since before I got pregnant with Huntler and I am hoping to cram myself back in it in just a matter of weeks! They both zip…I tried them on over the weekend. One just fits better than the other! Funny how the size 4 has plenty of room but the bigger one doesn’t??? If you know me, I am SOOO not a size 4…double that. Although that totally boosts my self esteem, it still doesn’t make the bigger one any less tight! So if you follow my Twitter, that is why I am on this work out craze!! But just a few workouts in a short amount of time and a crash diet aren’t going to be enough. I could just go buy another dress that actually allows me a little extra room to breathe, and if by Sunday I don’t have this little dilemma solved, I am going to have to. But I am SO not a formal kind of girl and spending time trekking to the mall, trying on dresses and then finding one that fits doesn’t appeal to me. I would so much rather buy my kids something fun instead!
So, that brings me to this. Has anyone out there ever used Spanx? Or what about the Target version Assets? Just be honest with me here…you can even post anonymously, I just want your feedback!! Obviously Target is cheaper and I can just go buy what I need as opposed to ordering…but do they work? I am not griping about being overweight because I don’t feel that way. Nor do I have a ton to hide here, but let’s be real, I have two kids and I didn’t exactly have a flat stomach BEFORE they came along!! And my thighs? We won’t go there!! So HELP me out here friends!!
I must be crazy for posting these pictures on here and definitely we’ll have to get some better ones this trip, but here are the dresses! You can laugh at them and how much we have changed…I don’t care!! I did!! And MY OH MY have we changed!
Here we are on our cruise to Cozumel. This was in January of 2004…so, so young! And my hair was SOOO long!! And yes, if you do the math you can probably figure out that I got pregnant with Huntler on this little trip! In hindsight I always think we should have chosen *Cruz* for his middle name! {This was scanned in and looks horrid, but you get the idea!!} And look how hideous their backdrop was!! UGH!!

Now this is the dress I LOVE!! I wore this one to a fancy dinner in Washington D.C. It is the one that fits well! You can’t tell but it is all glittery and shimmery and super cute!! This was taken in June of 2005.

Okay…I am counting on your help here! And for anyone who has ever been to a Broadway show…did you wear a wrap? The information they sent out suggests that women wear one. Ummm…for real? Chris and I laughed and laughed at that thought because it is so NOT me!!
Now…off to eat my salad! Wink, wink!!

Spanx are amazing. Yes, they work wonders. I actually just have the knock-offs from Wal-Mart. You won’t be dissapointed!
I have a couple of friends that SWEAR by Spanx! Great dresses
Hi! Haven’t been around your new site for awhile! LOVE it! SO cheery and happy! And New York?! How fun! I have used Assets and they do work! But I got a size that was a little too small and it squeezed the life out of me!!
First of all.. if the one you like better fits why do you need spanx?!
Secondly, I have the kind from Target. The one that acts as a corset around your middle. It works, but mine has some sort of wiring in it which is HORRIBLE. It bend and gives me awkward lines, so if you get one make sure it doesn’t have any wiring in it! I can’t even explain how ridiculous it is.
Third, if you are going soon YES to the wrap. It’s like 40 degrees and raining in NY this week! It’s April!!
And lastly, it depends on what show you are going to see. People honestly do NOT get that dressed up anymore. I wore a nice top and slacks with shimmery sparkly heels to Lion King and my nice big winter coat, because it was Spring aka FREEZING there was snow on the ground. For RENT I wore pretty much the same but that show is so casual I think I wore some cute jeans instead of slacks. It really depends what time the show is and which it is.
Let me know if that helps, you need more help, etc. And what show are you going to? I miss my home.. I wish I were going to NY!
OH DEAR. Please forgive my horrible grammar/spelling mistakes. For some reason I felt I needed to rush. I honestly felt like you were leaving in five minutes and needed to know asap. I promise I am educated and that I’m not crazy.. well, not THAT crazy.
Bethany…bless your heart
I have no problem being honest on this one…as a mother of 5 and fashion conscience I’ve tried it all. Spanx all the way! …and I prefer the ones that totally go over your tummy to right below the *ahem* bust line. Target assets do work, I wore them at christmas only because my spanx had a snag in them. Spanx are tighter.
Hope that helps! P.S. I got my spanx at Chicos…..
Bethany you are too funny! I had to post…SPANX are awesome! I only wear them when I need to wear a dress; like you, after two kiddos the tummy is not what it used to be! I got mine from QVC, I followed the chart size based on my height/weight and the fit was right on. Love the second dress, from your DC dinner. Also, I have to agree with the comment from someone else above about dressing up fancy for the broadway show. Unfortunately, the old glamor of NYC is not always what it once was and most people are really casual in their dress. Just a thought…hope all is well.

I wear Spanx and love what they do under a straight dress. My friend also wears them and recently tried Target’s brand, Assets.
She thinks they are equal to Spanx at a fraction of the cost. When you say a wrap, I immediately think of a pashmina. Get a big one that you can wrap around your shoulders if it is chilly.
I HEART my spanx!! I wear them under any dress or skirt that is somewhat figure hugging or made of “slinky” fabric. I’m not one to settle for knock offs so I’d go with the real thing!!
Okay, never tried the spanx, etc. But, I have been too a couple of Broadway shows in NYC and London. Just about anything you wear will work. I’ve seen everything from jeans to super fancy ballgowns.(Personally I don’t get the jeans thing!) Many do the business or business casual thing. So, whatever you wear you will fit in.
Go with the Spanx! They squeeze everything in but aren’t so tight that you have STUFF hanging over or under. A lot of the cheaper brands will give you a band around your thigh or the dreaded muffin top. And as for the wrap….come on are they serious??? I totally wouldn’t worry about that…I kinda think everything goes. It might still be cold there though.
I got an off brand spanx for a tight dress i wanted to wear.. i hated it! was so uncomfortable.. but maybe thats what i get for buying offbrands
Never tried spanx maybe I should it might help this one cute dress I have wearable as I haven’t worn it since before I was pregnant with Ian and I got it for our honeymoon so I had it for like three months back to my point. I don’t know how long you have but if you don’t have a Wii fit you might want to look into it they are pricey but they are fun and give you a great workout and you can put in what you want to do in what amount of time and it will track it for you so you know how you are doing. Also the kids can use it,maybe, at least eventually the kids can use it. Just a thought. Have a great time in NY hope to go there myself one day.
I shouldn’t be laughing at you….but that “Titanic” pictures is cracking me up!!! Maybe it’s just the lack of sleep
Thanks for sharing the *blast from the past* I loved it! You two look so young! Those dresses are both great though-good choices!
oh my gosh…look at how cute you guys are!
